Count Your Blessings
When I’m worried and I can’t sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
And I fall asleep counting my blessings.
When my bankroll is getting small
I think of when I had none at all
And I fall asleep counting my blessings.
I think about a nursery and I picture curly heads
And one by one I count them as they slumber in their beds.
If you’re worried and you can’t sleep
Just count your blessings instead of sheep
And you’ll fall asleep counting your blessings.
This song, written by Cole Porter, was made famous by Bing Crosby. I think it appealed to so many people because what person hasn’t turned tossed and turned, unable to sleep, because worry kept them awake.
Today we can certainly identify with bankrolls that are getting smaller. Fortunately, we can also identify with the curly heads tucked safely in their beds. My family and my friends who are like family to me are my greatest blessing. I hope that you, too, fall asleep counting your blessings.
Each of our blessings is sacred, a gift from God. I wish you countless sacred gifts.

May the Lord continually bless you with heaven’s blessings as well as with human joys.
Psalms 128:5
Today I have been thinking of the reason I started writing this blog. I wanted to share with people the blessings that are all around them just waiting to be found.
I think of my greatest blessings, each one an incredible gift from God. These gifts are my family, my friends and my faith. When I think of the love that fills my life, I am overwhelmed with joy.
After my greatest blessings, I think of the other gifts that God has given us:
- a warm, safe house
- the ability to buy the food that we want to eat rather than having to eat the food that is given to us
- being able to buy clothes we want to wear rather than having to wear a stranger’s cast-offs which my mother had to do all the time she was growing up
Each of these blessings is a gift that we could take for granted.
Finally, I think of the countless small blessings that we are given each day. There are blessings in our homes and blessings that we can see just outside our windows. Each blessing is a free gift given to increase our “human joy.” Some of the gifts we have been given are:
a little girl’s sweet giggle
a little boy’s strong hug
two yellow butterflies who flew outside my window for several days when my world was confined to my bed and the window
chocolate chocolate chocolate chocolate
a high school track team that stopped during a training run to have a laugh-filled snowball fight
a new book by a favorite author
What gifts have you been given? What are your greatest blessings? Your tiniest?
The gifts we receive every day from the Lord are sacred. I wish you countless sacred gifts.

From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
(John 1:16)
I was crazy today. I went to the grocery store. That doesn’t sound crazy, does it? Normally it wouldn’t be, but this is Thanksgiving week.
You could barely push your cart down the aisles of the grocery store. My husband was pushing the cart and I was wheeling my walker. I was waiting for someone to accidentally crash into my “bad” leg and injure it again.
My husband definitely thought that going grocery shopping today was crazy. To make him feel better I told him that the store would be worse the next three days. I don’t know if he felt better after I said that. I do know that we were happy to “escape” from the store.
As we drove past the mall I was amazed to see most parking spots full. Obviously, the mall was filled with lots and lots of equally crazy people.
As I was thinking about it I suddenly realized that we are also lucky people. We are blessed to have money to buy groceries. I was blessed to be able to walk through the store. We are blessed to have a warm car to get into after the damp & cold parking lot. Most of all, we are blessed beyond measure to have family and friends to share our food and our home and our love.
Blessings are a sacred gift. I wish you countless sacred gifts.

When I was in church this morning, the children sang “Servant Song” by Sr. Donna Marie McGargill. The first verse spoke directly to my heart.
What do you want of me, Lord?
Where do you want me to serve you?
Where can I sing your praises?
I am Your Song.
I often ask if the things I think the Lord is asking me to do are things that He is indeed asking. Sometimes I am sure of the answer. Loving people and helping them is a definite “yes.” Being thankful for all my blessings is a definite “yes.”Having more patience is a “yes.” Praying more and worrying less is a “yes.”
It is when I get to the creative area of my life that I am not always sure of the answer. One day I think that writing this blog is a “yes.” The next day I wonder if it is. One day I think that continuing to try to find a publisher for a little book that I believe He sent me is a “yes.” The next day I’m not sure.

I am always wondering, “What do you want of me, Lord?” I hope I have the wisdom to know when the thoughts I have are His voice in my head and when they are simply my thinking.
The chance to be His Song is a sacred gift. I wish you countless sacred gifts.

When we are young, I think we define strength as physical strength. How many pounds you can lift. How many miles you can run. Then, as we grow up, we realize that there is another kind of strength that is far more important. It used to be called “intestinal fortitude,” which meant courage and endurance.
Psalm 121 is a beautiful reminder that our strength comes from God.
I will lift up my eyes to the hills—
From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD is your keeper;
The LORD is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The LORD shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.
Looking to the Lord for your strength is a sacred gift.
May your blessings be many, your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

“If God shuts one door, he opens another.”
(Irish Proverb)
It probably sounds odd to talk about problems as gifts, but I have been thinking about how sometimes problems turn out to be blessings in disguise. We all have problems – illness, injuries, disappointments, loss. Some of our problems are merely worrisome while others are absolutely devastating.
I know that devastating problems may not have a blessing attached to them, but the sad, hard, worrisome problems may very well come with the gift of a blessing. I have tried to think of times in my life when problems came with a gift. I remembered when my second daughter was born. As soon as we came home from the hospital my husband flew across country to get a new job. Five weeks later, the day after Christmas, we threw the tree out on the curb and left to drive across country. It was especially traumatic because we would be leaving my parents and I would be leaving home for the first time.
When we got there, we moved into a townhouse in a development under construction. We had no neighbors. The builder had cut the phone line three times so we had no phone service and wouldn’t for weeks. Two days after we arrived my husband left to fly across country. He was gone for two weeks at a time. This was before cell phones so I was completely isolated with a four-year-old and a newborn. I remember one snowy morning when I bundled both of them into the car and drove to a phone booth to call a doctor. I waited 45 minutes in the cold phone booth for a return call which never came because the number on the pay phone didn’t actually belong to that pay phone. Thank God nothing bad happened to us when we there alone. If it had, there was no way my four-year-old could have gotten help.
From all this, though, a blessing came. After several months, we moved to another state where we had neighbors. It was still hard, though, because of my husband’s traveling.
Eventually he took a
different job which brought us only 3 1/2 hours from my parents. While he was at this new job, I received a gift. We went to a business dinner and the secretary’s husband, who was a professional photographer, showed me what he was doing. I had never seen a zoom lens and I was astonished that he could take pictures by candlelight. He went on to be my first teacher. He was a kind, gentle man and a wonderful teacher. If we hadn’t gone through the horrible moves, we would never have ended up here. I would never have met him and been given the incredible gift of photography.

Blessings in disguise are a sacred gift.
May your blessings be many, your worries few. I wish you countless sacred gifts.

“I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing.”
Ezekiel 34:26
It has been a month since my fall. In that time I have been showered with blessings. The greatest blessings have been the love and support and hard work of my husband and daughters and friends. Because of them I was able to come home instead of having to stay in rehab. The people in rehab worked hard to help me, but I was desperate to get home. Truly.
In the midst of this it is sometimes difficult to always count all my blessings, but I am grateful for them, including my kind, skilled surgeon and the nurses and therapists who come to our home. We are blessed to be able to receive help.

When I read this quote from Ezekiel, I realized that I had never thought of blessings coming down on us in showers. It is impossible to count the raindrops in a shower and impossible to count the blessings. It is such a lovely picture to see the blessings falling gently upon us and helping us to grow and blossom. I know that I need to grow in patience and in having a right mind that sees blessings and not the problems. Blessings are a sacred gift.
May your blessings be many, your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

One of my favorite children’s books is Snowflake Bentley, a Caldecott Medal Book written by Jacqueline Briggs Martin and illustrated by Mary Azarian. The book tells the story of Wilson A. Bentley who became known as Snowflake Bentley or the Snowflake Man.

Bentley (1865-1931) was a farmer from Jericho,Vermont, who became the first known photographer of the snowflake. He took over 5,000 photographs of snowflakes using a bellows camera connected to a microscope. He caught the snowflakes on black velvet so he could make photomicrographs of them before they melted. He showed that no two snowflakes are alike.

” … I have found no exact duplicate. In this storehouse of crystal treasures, what a delight is in store for all future lovers of snowflakes and of the beautiful in nature.”
Wilson Bentley described snowflakes as “tiny miracles of beauty” and snow crystals as “ice flowers.” He said,
“Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated.”
This discovery by Snowflake Bentley makes me think of Martin Buber’s observation that
“Those we love are the snowflakes of life. None are the same, each is beautiful, and all bring something special to our world.”
When I was a little girl, I used to run outside bundled up. With my scarf flying I’d twirl around and try to catch snowflakes on my tongue. Now that I’m grown up I will still, occasionally, try to catch a snowflake. I usually miss, but I have the joy of photographing winter scenes and the joy of knowing that I am surrounded by “snowflakes.” Each person that I love is a snowflake in my life – beautiful, unique and a gift from God. I hope that you are surrounded by “snowflakes,” too.
May your blessings be many, your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

Today is Epiphany, the day that the Magi, the wise men, came to the stable in Bethlehem to bring gifts to the baby Jesus. Guided only by a star they came bearing gifts.
T. S. Eliot’s poem, The Journey of the Magi,” puts their journey in human terms that we can understand. Rather than the perfectly-attired, princely men on their clean, well-behaved camels that we find in picture books, they were cold, tired, travel-sore. Eliot wrote:
“A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a long journey:
The ways deep and the weather sharp, The very dead of winter…”
“A hard time we had of it.
At the end we preferred to travel all night,”
They made a difficult, long journey to pay homage to the newborn King. They brought him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. These were precious gifts in those days.
This is the day to ask ourselves what precious gifts the Lord has given us. Each one is a sacred gift shaped to fit what He wants us to do and be. It is so easy for me to think of all the things I’m not and all the things I don’t have the talents to do. I guess that is part of being human. But the Lord has given each of us incredible gifts. What gifts have you been given?
May your blessings be many, your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

Glory to God in highest heaven,
Who unto man His Son hath given;
While angels sing with tender mirth,
A glad new year to all the earth.
Martin Luther
As always it is hard to believe that the year is nearly gone. It has literally flown by.
New Year’s Eve is traditionally a time of recrimination, of feeling that we are not enough, that we need to change. Hence, the New Year’s Resolution. In fact, we usually have a list of resolutions. We promise ourselves we will lose 50 punds by Valentine’s Day, go to the gym and work out HARD for three hours a day, never ever say a cross word, etc., etc., etc. Whatever our foibles and failings we are going to cure them all in the New Year.
Instead the advent of a new year should be a time of joy when we look forward to all the wonderful things that the year could bring. I love this quote:
“A new year is unfolding—like a blossom
with petals curled tightly concealing the beauty within.”
Unknown
How much better it is to eagerly anticipate the hidden beauty which will be opened to us in the New Year than to plan on removing the ugliness we think is within us.
New Year’s Eve should be a time for reflecting on the past year and thanking the Lord for all of our blessings and for His help in our hard times. I thank God for all my years, the good times and the “wish that hadn’t happened” times. I thank my family and friends for their love and support and kindness this year. I couldn’t be where I am today without them and couldn’t be the person I am. I love each of you from the depth of my soul.
Each moment we will have in the New Year is a sacred gift. I pray it truly will be “A glad new year to all the earth.”
May your blessings be many, your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

Christmas is almost here, the wondrous night when shepherds and wise men followed the star to Bethlehem to pay homage to a baby in a manger.
When Mary and Joseph looked with love upon their son. When the prophecies were fulfilled.
I am filled with an almost breathless anticipation. I look forward to…
being wrapped in a cocoon of love
experiencing the joy of Christmas morning in a house filled with the excitement of children
laughing amid the happy chaos of wrapping paper, ribbons and toys
thanking God for all of our blessings
sharing our table with family and
friends
being tempted by Christmas cookies and chocolate pie
giving gifts that make people happy
holding in our hearts the part of our family that can’t be with us.
Christmas is a sacred gift. I hope your day is joyful and filled with love.
May your blessings be many, your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

JOY TO THE WORLD! THE LORD IS COME!
LET EARTH RECEIVE HER KING,
LET EV’RY HEART PREPARE HIM ROOM…
This is a wonderful season. Many of us are busy, in fact incredibly busy, with shopping for gifts, decorating our homes, wrapping gifts, baking cookies, delivering gifts, decorating cookies, visiting Santa, going to holiday parties while simultaneously doing all of our regular work. It feels like multi-tasking on fast forward.

All of this activity is in preparation for Christmas. Sometimes, though, it seems like a huge birthday party without the birthday child. I wonder how often the season becomes the reason and there is, literally, no room in the manger.
I hope that as we near Christmas Eve we can feel the awe the shepherds felt and make room for God in the midst of everything else.
May your blessings be many, your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

On the Internet I came across the advice to make a list titled, “50 Things I Love To Do.” Piece of cake! That’s what I thought when I started writing the list. So far I am up to only 42.
Then, this morning, after I had actually forgotten about the list, my inner child came up with something I wanted to do. Frankly, I had also forgotten I had an inner child. Fortunately, the Internet reminds you of things like that. Anyway, my inner child wanted to eat ice cream. I got an ice cream sandwich out of the freezer.
Since I was temporarily a child again, I ran my tongue around the ice cream sandwich between the cookie outsides. I leaned my head back and laughed at myself. My tongue was frozen and ice cream dribbled down my chin. For those minutes I had no worries. I was just a prickly tongue licking smooth, slippery ice cream.
It was so much fun I’ll have to add, “Let out my inner child,” to my list of 50 things. I hope you let out your inner child, too.
May your blessings be many, your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

Since I hope we will become blog friends, I have to confess that I am a chocoholic. I LOVE chocolate. Dark chocolate. I love the feel of the smooth, soft, nearly sinful confection as it melts in my mouth. I should wear a t-shirt with the following saying:
EMERGENCY ALERT: If wearer of this shirt is found vacant, listless, or depressed, ADMINISTER CHOCOLATE IMMEDIATELY.
After all, the four basic food groups are: solid dark chocolate, dark chocolate with nuts, dark chocolate with peanut butter and dark chocolate truffles.
Imagine my joy when scientists proclaimed dark chocolate to be an antioxidant powerhouse. It prolongs life while making it richer and more fun. Obviously, chocolate is nature’s perfect food. I can’t even imagine why I would want to heed the advice found on some websites to “cure (my) chocolate addiction.” That would be like “curing my addiction” to sunshine or life. For me, chocolate is a very big little blessing. How about you?
May your blessings be many, your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

Last night I was sitting in bed working on my book proposal. For two-and-a-half hours as I worked the deep-throated rumble of thunder rolled across the black sky. It was so loud it sounded like it was coming from next door. Lightning flashes bathed the windows in a yellow-white glow. Just as I would get a thought a new clap of thunder would startle me and the thought would vanish. Finally I stopped trying to work and just watched the storm.

The show was awesome! Being able to see and hear it while snuggled in a soft bed was a blessing.
May your blessings be many,
your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

I went on a photography field trip. We were taken to a weed-filled field on a drizzly day and told to take pictures. My initial reaction was, “You have got to be kidding!”
I lay on my stomach in the wet grass and photographed a tiny purple flower that I was surprised to find in the middle of “nothing.” I was even more surprised when I loved the resulting image.

Finding this tiny flower in a field of weeds was a small blessing.
May your blessings be many,
your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.

I find joy each day in celebrating life’s little blessings, each one a sacred gift. I hope you will come back to this blog often and share your blessings. So, put on comfy clothes, sit back and enjoy!
Since this is my first blog, I want to explain the title, Sacred Gifts. While I was writing a book on marketing professional services, another book just came to me. I referred to the first book as my big book and this book as my little book. I believe the Lord sent it to me. Hence, the name.
Even in the midst of these frightening times I look for little blessings. They feel even more important now. I am grateful for summer, for finding a perfect rose. Its sweet scent reminds me of happy times.

What blessing are you grateful for today?
May your blessings be many, your worries few.
I wish you countless sacred gifts.
